Why?

I have 4 main reasons for undertaking this:

  1. To recognise a brave fight borne with tremendous courage and celebrate a wonderful lady who I loved very much
  2. To honour a promise made - we were to have spent our 30th wedding anniversary in Rome in March 2006 having spent 4 days there in May 2005.
  3. To raise much needed funds for 4 charitable causes that Anne supported.
  4. To help me move forward - when you lose someone close, you have to take control of your feelings and undertaking this walk is my way of facing the future.

News

The first walk which took 110 days started at the end of January 2008 and covered a distance of 1305 miles from my home in Gosport to Rome. There were a couple of unforgettable surprises waiting for me in Rome.

The British Ambassador to the  Holy See invited me to tea at his residence and I was granted an audience with  His Holiness the Pope. Neither of these were expected nor was the global  media interest - stories of the walk appeared in press from the US to  Vietnam and the Daily Mirror ran a feature on the story in July 2008. BBC Radio  South, ITV Meridian and local press have also widely covered the
project.

Other  events in 2008 included a charity golf event, giving talks and
presentations  about the project and finding myself becoming an auction lot and
raising £300 by  working in a salon for half a day doing head massages!!
2009 sees me attempting the following:
    *   Co-hosting the Mayor of Gosport Charity Ball on 6th March - Email:
Michelle Barrett for details.

    *   Visit to Melbourne and Sydney Late May to mid June with fundraising
events in Melbourne and walking over the arch of the Sydney Harbour  Bridge
and a possible attempt at setting a Guinness world record en  route (to be
confirmed).

    *   400 mile walk from Gosport in Hampshire to Seaham in County Durham
mid  July to end of August.

    *   Charity golf day at Lee on Solent Golf Club 24th September.

Events planned for 2010 to conclude the fundraising project  include a gala
evening.

Raising funds for charities and celebrating a life. Here is some information about Anne.
To see how it's all going, follow my progress in my walk journal.
